BRIDGEPORT -- Jason Robards, the veteran stage and screen actor who won back-to-back Oscars for "All the President's Men" and "Julia," died Tuesday after battling cancer. He was 78.

Robards was born Jason Nelson Robards Jr. on July 26, 1922, in Chicago, the son of Jason Nelson Robards Sr., a prominent actor.
Jason Robards, the veteran stage and screen actor who won back-to-back Oscars for "All the President's Men" and "Julia," died Dec. 26 at a hospital in Bridgeport, Conn., after battling cancer.
He later moved to California, where his father, Jason Robards Sr., was working in the movies. In his teens, he was an athlete at Hollywood High School. Robards married Eleanor Pitman in 1948.
