The Supreme Court can decide any moment now whether to approve the Trump administration’s deployment of the National Guard in Chicago.
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that he will be deploying state National Guard members as well as California Volunteers to help staff food banks amid the ongoing government shutdown.
The National Hurricane Center also is monitoring two other tropical waves, in addition to Tropical Storm Melissa: The axis of an eastern Atlantic tropical wave is near 25W, south of 14N, moving west at 11 mph. A tropical wave along 30W extends south of 15N, and is nearly stationary.
A federal appeals court allowed President Trump's deployment of National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon. Oregon plans to appeal the decision. Also, Tennessee officials are filing a lawsuit challenging the deployment of troops to Memphis.
Portland City Councilor Mitch Green told CNN that National Guard troops should consider their constitutional duty before following potentially unlawful deployment orders.
Trump has long complained that the White House lacked a large event space. Most functions are held in the East Room, which can accommodate about 200 people. Larger state dinners often have been held under a tent on the South Lawn. The new ballroom, by contrast, may ultimately hold 900 people, the president has indicated.
The National Park Service could be headed for more mass layoffs, suggests a Monday court filing which says NPS workers would be included in Interior Department plans to let go more than 2,000 employees in one state alone.
National Guard troops could be deployed to New Orleans before the end of November in keeping with Gov. Jeff Landry's request for federal intervention to address crime, Landry and New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said.
