Two years later, controversies led to Howell’s abrupt departure before he was able to negotiate his first collective bargaining agreement.

Howell’s resignation was made on his own and reportedly surprised some members of the NFLPA’s executive committee.

“It’s clear that my leadership has become a distraction to the important work the NFLPA advances every day,” Howell wrote in the statement.
