No Democrat holds a statewide elected office in Louisiana, where President Trump had landslide support in his 2024 election.

M aine Gov. Janet Mills is now running for a seat in the U.S. Senate, according to an announcement on X, formerly Twitter, Tuesday morning.

Each of Cassidy’s Republican opponents believes he can stop Cassidy from winning a third term. They are: state Sen. Blake Miguez of New Iberia; Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta; and state Treasurer John Fleming. At least one other Republican is expected to jump into the race.
