The Milwaukee County Zoo in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, catches their baby red panda, Cinder, experience snow for the first time. See the video of Cinder playing in the snow.
The pigment stains the snow "blood-red" and reduces the glacier's reflectivity, causing it to melt faster, the report said.
The team also measured the pigment concentration of the snow with a second spectroradiometer to figure out how much of the red color spectrum, most likely from the snow algae, was present.
For context, there were La Niña conditions during the deadly and catastrophic winter storm of 2021, Winter Storm Uri which is often referred to as snowmagedon.
