Despite the newcomer, Earth still has just one true moon. NASA says 2025 PN7 keeps its distance - about 4 million kilometers away, or roughly 10 times farther than the moon - meaning it won't affect tides, gravity, or life on Earth in any way, according to AZ Central.
Quasi-moons are not real moons and don't actually orbit the Earth, although they sometimes appear to do so for short periods of time, Phil Nicholson, professor of astronomy at Cornell University, told ABC News. Instead, they orbit the sun -- like typical asteroids -- on paths that are "very similar" to Earth's.
As of Thursday, Oct. 23, the moon phase is Waxing Crescent. There will be 4% of the moon lit up tonight, according to NASA's Daily Moon Observation. But sadly there's still too little lit up to see anything, but just wait a few days and it will brighten up our skies soon enough. The next full moon will be on Nov. 5.
