The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) confirmed the first case of West Nile Virus in the state in 2025. On Thursday, HHS announced that the first case of the virus this year was reported in an adult between the ages of 41 and 60 from northern Iowa.

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — Iowa Health and Human Services announced the first human West Nile case in Iowa Thursday afternoon. The infection, which occurred in a middle-aged adult from northern Iowa, was confirmed through a test at the State Hygienic Lab.

Elevated levels of the disease are trending currently, and are of 'serious concern' over the next eight weeks, say researchers.
