The emergency ministry said it is investigating why it lost contact, and the Interstate Aviation Committee has launched a probe.

A passenger plane crashed Thursday in Russia's Far East, killing all 48 passengers and crew on board, officials said.

The plane, whose tail number showed it was built in 1976, was operated by a Siberia-based airline called Angara.
