New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is aiming to be busy ahead of the MLB trade deadline but tried to temper expectations in terms of what might happen.
NEW YORK — Both Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone called the move to designate DJ LeMahieu for assignment on Wednesday a “tough” decision. LeMahieu had been in pinstripes since 2019, a well-respected and hard-working figure in the Yankees’ clubhouse.
"We’re going to town,” Cashman said. “We’re going to do everything we possibly can to improve ourselves and try to match up."
DJ LeMahieu was cut Wednesday by the New York Yankees with almost $22 million remaining on his contract, one day after the two-time batting champion got demoted to the bench.
Pitching prospect Cam Schlittler started on Wednesday night and earned the win, flashing his 99-mph heater over 5 1/3 strong innings. The right-hander was bit by the home run ball twice — he gave up three earned runs on four hits with two walks — but he racked up seven strikeouts, exiting in the sixth inning to a standing ovation.
